Senior Legal Counsel – Gas and Power Trading

In this role, you will provide legal counsel and support to our Gas, LNG, and Power trading desks, contributing to the success and compliance of our global trading operations.

As a Senior Legal Counsel focused on Gas, LNG, and Power Trading, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring that our trading activities comply with relevant laws and regulations while also facilitating profitable trading strategies. Your expertise will be essential in managing legal risks, negotiating contracts, and advising on a wide range of legal matters related to energy trading.

Responsibilities:

• Support the General Counsel by leading advisory to the front-office traders from the Gas & Energy team in trade negotiation and documentation pertaining to short and long-term MSPAs and SPA transactions.
• Provide expert legal counsel and strategic advice to the Gas & Energy division, ensuring compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards.
• Oversee and lead a team of legal professionals, guiding their work and development, and fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture within the legal department.
• Draft, review, and negotiate complex agreements related to energy trading, including purchase and sale agreements, supply contracts, transportation agreements, and other commercial arrangements.
• Collaborate closely with internal stakeholders, including traders, risk management, finance, and operations teams, to identify legal risks and provide proactive solutions to facilitate business objectives.
• Monitor changes in energy and commodity trading regulations, and proactively develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure the company’s compliance with evolving legal requirements.
• Manage and resolve disputes and legal issues arising from trading activities, working closely with external counsel and representing the company’s interests in negotiations and litigation, if necessary.
• Stay informed about industry trends, market dynamics, and emerging legal issues in the energy trading sector, contributing to the company’s strategic decision-making process.

Requirements:

• Qualification to practice law in England & Wales
• Experience as an Energy Lawyer, with a proven track record of advising on energy and commodity trading matters, preferably within a similar commodity trading or utilities environment.
• Strong understanding of energy markets, trading instruments, and relevant regulations, including FERC, CFTC, and other relevant regulatory frameworks.
• Excellent leadership and people management skills, with a demonstrated ability to lead and develop a team of legal professionals.
• Exceptional drafting, negotiation, and communication skills, with the ability to convey complex legal concepts in a clear and concise manner to non-legal stakeholders.
• Proven ability to work collaboratively across departments and geographies to achieve business objectives while managing legal risks.
• Experience in managing and resolving disputes, including negotiation, mediation, and litigation if required.
• High level of integrity, professionalism, and a strong commitment to ethical business practices.
